Audrey giggled softly as she rinsed the shampoo from Rex's long, silky, golden hair. She nuzzled the firm muscles beneath his warm, soapy shoulder, cooed seductive words into his ear and lovingly massaged his back to soothe away all the day's stresses. In response, he gazed longingly back at her with those velvety chocolate-brown eyes of his and sighed with much contentment.

He was the perfect male, she thought with a smile. So handsome. So strong. So sweet. So smart. And she knew he would do anything for her if she but asked. Now if she could just do something about his breath…

Ah, well, she reasoned philosophically. You couldn't have everything. Besides, what else could you expect from a golden retriever?

The big dog's tongue lolled out the side of his mouth then, making Audrey laugh. Working as a dog groomer wasn't without its perks, she thought. She'd made some really good friends since coming to work at what the owner of the establishment termed a "canine salon." Of course, all those new friends had four legs, bad breath and conversational skills limited to the words woof and grrr and the odd howl, but that was a vocabulary more extensive than some of her ex-boyfriends claimed.

She'd lost her job with One-Day-at-a-Timers almost immediately after beginning her new assignment for a local bank, because she'd crashed their computer system in a big way. The good news was that in doing so, she had pretty much wiped out the national debt. The bad news was, it was only on paper. The bad news was also that the bank manager had to be tranquilized at the scene, and the paramedics had sort of thought it might be better if Audrey just took her leave quietly then, before anybody else got hurt.

It was just as well, she thought now. Ever since her job at Rush Commercial Designs, Inc. had come to an end a month before, her heart hadn't been in her temp work, anyway. And she was beginning to think she might have finally found her niche as a dog groomer. The animals loved her, and she was getting especially good at canine pedicures.

Best of all, in the two weeks that she'd been working at Scruff E. Neck's, she hadn't made one single mistake. Well, none that mattered, anyway. Much. As long as she stayed away from the cash register and the blow dryer. And the light switches and the refrigerator. And the power vacuum and the electric clippers. And pretty much all of the other appliances, too. As long as she did that, everything was fine.

The only thing she felt bad about these days was the fact that Wheeler Rush was no longer a part of her daily routine. She missed him. A lot. She missed seeing him all pressed and starched every day at his desk. She missed the soft murmur of his voice on the other side of his office door whenever he'd been on the telephone. She missed his smiles, his shrugs, his sighs.
